Food blossomed in the kitchen of Yi Ji Hokkien Mee with its own special fragrance and touch of love. Auntie Cynthia and Uncle Kiat were the definition of a dynamic duo - working perfectly in sync to serve up dishes of local flavours to their customers. A distinct couple - Auntie Cynthia, a bubbly lady often seen interacting with the customers, while Uncle Kiat, sporting his bright golden hair, diligently immerses himself in the magic of his cooking.
Serving carrot cake and hokkien mee at affordable prices, the lovely couple took immense pride in what they served - understandably so. The carrot cake, golden brown on the outside, boasted a nice crisp with every bite, perfectly complementing the soft and fragrant inside which melted in your mouth. The chilli, which was just the right amount of spice and kick, brought out the fragrance of the shrimps, and elevated the hokkien mee's taste.
They shared that both of them used to work for their boss in other outlets at Old Airport Road, but recently in the past 1 year, things have not been easy. They bought over this store as a franchise but sales were looking bad. In an attempt to keep the business alive, Auntie Cynthia and Uncle Kiat made the decision to manage this store themselves.
Even in such trying times, they are determined to stick through thick and thin together, unconditionally supporting each other. Aunty Cynthia was full of praise for her husband, boasting proudly about how he always took great pride and care to fry the carrot cake till crispy, down to every single plate. Like Auntie Cynthia, we were moved by the dedication to giving his best no matter what.
A gentle massage to the soul, food at Yi Ji Hokkien Mee tells both a beautiful story and wonderful flavours alike. We send love back to this couple, and our best wishes to them in these trying times.
Until we can shake leg and lim kopi again
